How to add “Add Attachment” option to SharePoint Blogs

There might be some instances where you would like to show the “Add Attachment” function in a SharePoint Blog.  By default this is not an option straight out the box with MOSS 2007.  You have to modify the blog schema.xml file on the server to accomplish this.

Follow these steps to accomplish this:

1.  Remote into your SharePoint server and browse to:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\12\TEMPLATE\SiteTemplates\Blog\Lists\Posts\schema.xml
2.  Right click the schema.xml file and choose to open the file in notepad. (Best practice before you make any changes to this file, make a copy of the file first just incase.)
3.  Look for this block of code:

<Forms>
<Form Url=”ViewPost.aspx” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
<Form Url=”EditPost.aspx” ToolbarTemplate=”BlogEditFormToolBar” Template=”BlogForm” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
<Form Url=”NewPost.aspx” ToolbarTemplate=”BlogNewFormToolBar” Template=”BlogForm” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
</Forms>

4.  Next delete both of these lines (highlighted in red):

<Forms>
<Form Url=”ViewPost.aspx” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
<Form Url=”EditPost.aspx” ToolbarTemplate=”BlogEditFormToolBar” Template=”BlogForm” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
<Form Url=”NewPost.aspx” ToolbarTemplate=”BlogNewFormToolBar” Template=”BlogForm” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
</Forms>

5.  Your schema.xml file should now look like this.

<Forms>
<Form Url=”ViewPost.aspx” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
<Form Url=”EditPost.aspx” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
<Form Url=”NewPost.aspx” WebPartZoneID=”Main” />
</Forms>

6. Save the file.
7.  Create a new blog on your SharePoint site.  You should now see the option to add an attachment.
