SharePoint 2010 Fixing Error: An object of the type Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPIisWebsiteunprovioningJobDefinition named “unprovisioning ” already exists.

I ran into a strange error while I was trying to unprovision a Web Application in my SharePoint 2010 COOP environment.  When trying to delete the Web Application through Central Administration I was receiving the following error:

An object of the type Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPIisWebsiteunprovisioningJobDefinition named “Unprovisioning  <WEB APPLICATION NAME>” already exists under the parent Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPWebService named “”. Rename your object or delete the existing object.

Apparently there was already a timer job service to unprovision the web application and when trying to delete the web application it could not recreate the timer job service because it already existed.  Not sure how exactly this happened, but I believe the SharePoint Timer service job on one of my web front ends was not started, which then could not unprovision the Web Application from that server, which left the “Unprovisioning <WEB APPLICATION NAME>” timer job.  I made sure all timer job services were started on all servers and tried to delete again.  I received the same error above.

If you run into a similar situation you need to delete the “Unprovisioning <WEB APPLICATON NAME>” job from the Job Definitions from within Central Admin.

Central Administration -> Monitoring -> Review Job Definitions -> Unprovisioning Web Application (WEB APPLICATION NAME) -> Delete

Once this timer job is deleted, you can then delete the Web Application.
